Michael A. Almond is a retired attorney and a lifelong resident of North Carolina. His career in global business and international economic development spans more than 40 years, with an emphasis on Germany and Western Europe. In 2005 the President of the Federal Republic of Germany awarded Mr. Almond the prestigious Bundesverdienstkreuz (Federal Cross of the Order of Merit) for “outstanding commitment in fostering the relations between the United States and the Federal Republic of Germany.”
While a partner at Parker Poe Adams & Bernstein LLP in Charlotte, Mr. Almond was the founder and chairman of the firm’s international business law division; he currently serves as Retired, Of Counsel to the firm for international business issues. In 1975/76, Mr. Almond served as law clerk to the Hon. J. Braxton Craven, Jr. on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. Mr. Almond is a certified commercial arbitration judge for the American Arbitration Association for large, complex commercial disputes.
From 1999 to 2005, Mr. Almond was President, CEO, and board member of the Charlotte Regional Partnership, a non-profit regional North Carolina/South Carolina economic development organization. During this time Mr. Almond also served as member and chairman of the board of directors of the Charlotte Branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond. From 2005—2013 he served as a member of the Senior Advisory Board, Deutsche Bank Private Wealth Management (German/American Business) in New York. Mr. Almond has also served as Senior Executive in Residence and member of the German Senior Advisory Board of the Center for Creative Leadership, a globally-recognized research institute and provider of leadership solutions worldwide. Mr. Almond’s career has also focused on economic and workforce development and education, including his recent election as a board member of the North Carolina Community College Foundation.
Mr. Almond is CEO of Antaeus Consulting, LLC, an international business and economic development consulting firm active in Europe and the United States, with an emphasis on international business, trade, and investment, and has served as a board member of several privately-owned companies.
Mr. Almond is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and is a board member of the North Carolina Zeitgeist Foundation. He has served as a member of the board of directors of the Atlantic Council of the United States in Washington, D.C. and was the founding director of the Warburg Chapter of the American Council on Germany in Charlotte.
Mr. Almond is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (Morehead Scholar, highest honors, Phi Beta Kappa) and the UNC School of Law (Morehead Law Fellow, honors, Order of the Coif) and was a Fulbright Fellow in political science at the University of Mannheim, Germany.
In 2020, Mr. Almond completed his debut historical fiction novel, The Tannery, scheduled for publication by Köehler Books in October 2021.
